The reserves travelled to Boronia with only 7 players in the second squad after a series of events and birthdays from the previous night caused some late withdrawls. The game started with Mt.Lilydale fielding only 9 players to the Boronia 11 man full squad and the boys responded in spectacular fashion with the kick off starting from half-way the reserves strung a series of great passes together for Tyler to slot home the opening goal within a minute.
The game settled and the reserves were the stronger side, looking very lively considering the situation. Mt.Lilydale continued to press with McCabe and Drago coming very close with long range efforts, but it was the legs of Boronia's extra two players that started to show towards the end of the first half, with the home side scoring two goals in quick succession to pull the game back to 2-1 to the home side at half time.
The second half was again all Mt.Lilydale with the team fresh from the break, they looked lively and the more likely to score and break the game open. The goal eventually came after multiple chances with Ernie pouncing on a loose ball in the box to slot home the equaliser to level the game at 2-2 with 17 minutes to play.
But the game took a brutal turn when Boronia hit a cheap free kick to score and make the game almost certainly theirs with a 3-2 lead with only 5 minutes remaining and with the reserves looking legless after Tyler recieved a red card to bring the squad to only 8 players.
Mt.Lilydale, known as the "Mighty Goats" rallied and showed the Boronia faithful that they didn't come just to play but to get a result and the goal they craved came with only a minute remaining when Rob Muscatello went on solo run to slot the ball nicely into the far corner to steal a draw for the reserves and silence the home crowd! The game ended a 3-3 draw and dare l say how many goals the reserves would have scored if we had a fit 11 players on the day.
A extremely good effort to all the boys involved and congratulations on your overall team performance, it deserves to be applauded by all involved at the club! The players were: Daniel Borrielli, Rob Muscatello, David Chioda, Vince D'Allessandro, Mick Orlando, Anthony McCabe, Joe Drago, Lui Pettinella, Ernie Lando and Tyler Sonsini. Well done to you all!!! Thank-You!
