Reserves Fail To Celebrate Liam's Final Game

Mt Lilydale Old Collegians 1 - 2 Baxter

The club geared up for its final game of the season and it was pleasing to see that we had enough players fielded for the reserves side
Before the game started Liam announced that this would be his final game as he decided to hang up the boots capping a fine footballing career.
The first half was contolled by the visitors with the goats failing to mentally switch on and Baxter going into the break with a 1-0 lead.
A half time plea by myself (to go out and get the chocolates) seemed to have worked and the ressy goats got into the groove which saw some fluent passing moves and a much higher work etchic emerge.
After controlling the flow of play Micka latched onto a well weighted cross to volley into the back of the Baxter net 1-1.  The game contiued with the goats peppering the Baxter goals and Liam was unlucky to see his looping header go just over the cross bar from a well orchestrated McCabe free kick.
The game looked to be heading for a draw when 'il presidente' was dispossesed within our own half and the Baxter forward going on a direct and quick run to beat three goats and neatly tuck the ball into the Daniel's net.  Overall I would have said that a draw would have been a fair result given the contrasting halves played by both sides.

In reflection of the season a potentially match winning side was put on the park on most weekends which could have and should have seen the side finish in the top four.  Instead we wound up with 8th position which is a disappointing result for club, coaching staff but more importantly the players.  There is no doubt that our archilles heel has been in not have a natural goal scoring machine and fitness levels, however above all its the mental application and learning when to attack and when to defend that can be improved upon and which in my opinion will see this side achieve so much more.
The season saw us sitting in the top three for the first half of the season but we fell away after some fantastic performances during the first eight rounds which showed exactly what this side is capable of......what could have been.

I would like to thank all the players for their efforts throughout the season and hopefully 2010 will reap better rewards for all involved and will see the rise of the goats.
